Mary Heath’s tomb memorial led Jodi and Graham to Robert Sewell’s late-nineteenth-century Pre-Raphaelite painting of Sir Gawain flanked by two angels. The painting depicts an episode from the medieval Arthurian romance Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, which is set in Dovedale in the Peak District. In the story, Gawain rides between two gigantic rock formations called the Angels. Note how the Grail is depicted as the Heart of the Rose.

Led by clues to Dovedale and the Gawain story, Jodi and Graham followed Gawain’s journey as depicted in the tale. They discovered that the journey was tied to the clue left in Evelyn de Morgan’s painting The Hourglass. The picture shows a book titled Mors Janua Vitae (Death Is the Gateway of Life), which led them to Joseph Paton’s painting of the same name. It depicts Sir Gawain completing his quest in Wetton Mill Cave, near the Dovedale rock formations. This was their ultimate destination, where they discovered the Heart of the Rose.
