Robert Sewell’s nineteenth-century painting depicts Sir Gawain from the medieval Arthurian romance Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. Set in Dovedale in the Peak District, the scene shows the knight riding between two gigantic rock formations called The Angels.
The book in the bottom-left corner of Evelyn de Morgan’s painting The Hourglass, titled Mors Janua Vitae (Death Is the Gateway of Life), led to Joseph Paton’s painting of the same name, which depicts Sir Gawain completing his quest in Wetton Mill Cave, near the Dovedale rock formations in the Peak District.
